Transformations in companies are highly complex endeavors with an extremely high likelihood of failure. This is not necessarily due to the incompetence of the actors involved, even though it often appears that way. Entire armies of consultants tell us that we only need the necessary tools of change management to be successful: a compelling vision, clear communication, constructive engagement, broad involvement, empowerment, etc.
It’s not that simple. In reality, transformations are primarily a bundle of contradictions, paradoxes, and dilemmas. No matter what a CEO or any leader does, it is always wrong – in one way or another.
This lecture takes a realistic look at the challenges of transformations. It is beneficial for all involved to at least be aware of them. Perhaps this awareness will lead to greater acceptance of the suffering and inevitable uncertainty.
