AI between Action and Execution

WHEN MACHINES GET BETTER AT EXECUTION AND PEOPLE NEED TO ACT AGAIN

Execution means carrying out what has already been clearly decided or prescribed by rules. Action, by contrast, means having genuine options. It requires thinking, weighing options, deciding, communicating, negotiating, and building consensus. It also means bearing risk.

We are seeing a shift away from action and toward execution. Bureaucracy, fixed rules, and standardized processes all contribute. AI and robots will increasingly take over that execution. What we need all the more are people who can think independently, understand things at their core, communicate, and negotiate – and who are willing to bear the consequences of their thinking and actions.

A FEW KEY IDEAS FROM THE KEYNOTE:

AI is a huge opportunity. It takes operational work off our hands and supports complex problem solving – as long as humans retain control over thinking and action.

AI makes execution cheaper. Companies will not keep paying salaries for tasks that AI can perform at far lower cost.

AI makes personal responsibility more valuable. In that sense, it is a call for leaders and employees to take more responsibility again – in dialogue, in weighing options, in negotiating, and in clarifying issues together.

WHO SHOULD HEAR THIS KEYNOTE:

Executives, leaders, HR leaders, people responsible for digitalization and transformation, organizational development professionals, IT leaders, employees, works councils, management consultants, associations.
