Eight out of ten leaders have no clear answer when asked how they lead. Most point to intuition or situational leadership. Without a clear idea of leadership, however, leaders quickly become driven by the world around them.
The consequences are often micromanagement, overload, an explosion of meetings, endless loops, bureaucracy, or dealing with the same issues again and again. A clear idea of leadership grows out of the relatively stable conditions in which a leader operates and is the result of conscious, structured reflection.
A FEW KEY IDEAS FROM THE KEYNOTE:
There is no universally right way to lead. Good leadership comes down to whether problems, decisions, and coordination are handled by the right people in the given context.
Trust grows from clarity and reliability. Good leaders communicate their idea of leadership, stabilize it, and act consistently in line with it.
Universal leadership principles can become costly. Different leadership contexts call for different ideas of leadership.
